Rose McGowan has been vocal in recent months about Harvey Weinstein’s sexual abuse and misogyny, and it’s no surprise the actress’ new memoir details those experiences. However, Brave also reveals previously unknown dark moments from her childhood.
McGowan writes that she grew up in Italy in a cult called the Children of God until she fled to nearby Tuscany with her father, leaving her mother behind. She also details an eating disorder brought on by a boyfriend who bought her exercise equipment and fashion magazines that damaged her self-esteem.
In a particularly shocking excerpt, McGowan writes of her first love who was “stabbed twenty-three times and almost decapitated.” His murder remains unsolved.
Brave has been released and is available for purchase.
